The Omiš City Museum was founded in 1986. It is located in the building next to the eastern city gate, at the entrance to the old town center.
Antique stone monuments with inscriptions are on display in the courtyard of the Museum, while on the ground floor there is a permanent exhibition of archeological and historical material related to the town of Omiš and its surroundings.
There are several first-class archeological monuments in the museum. The most important ancient monument is a stone inscription in Latin from the 1st century, dedicated to Emperor Claudius. There is also a Roman inscription made during the time of Emperor Tiberius and the marble head of Emperor Tiberius, found not far from the site of the great ancient altar dedicated to Augustus.
A relief plaque depicting the resurrection of Christ was found in the remains of an early Christian church from the Justinian period (6th c.) In Gata near Omiš …
The tombstone of Prince Miroslav Kacic with a Bosančica inscription dates from the 13th century. There are numerous other stone fragments from antiquity and the Middle Ages.
Old Croatian jewelry, specimens of old money, fine art displays and various other materials also provide insight into the city’s past and its significance throughout history.
An important exhibit is the early Baroque, richly decorated Omis ducal (decision, ie the order of the Venetian authorities), issued in Venice in 1579.
