Omiš definitely has its fair share of churches, but this one is the very heart of the town. It was built on the ruins of an old, narrow church, as has been the place of spiritual refuge for the people of Omiš ever since the beginning of the 17th century. Ever since then the town and the church have been guarded by the statue of St Micheal, after whom it was in fact named.
